A bar that jams soulful tunes, a venue that rocks out with their cat, Trash Cat, a pool room with a psychedelic staircase, an elegant bar with taxidermy, and a disco with glowing floors.

Rum Boogie Cafe

Memphis is the home of the blues, and Rum Boogie Cafe on Beale St. has been keeping the blues alive since 1985. They have live soul music every day of the week. You can eat Southern staples like fried catfish, BBQ pork, or fried okra. You can also choose from an array of rum-based cocktails, beer, or wine to enjoy while you listen to the blues. As you listen to the blues, look around. You’ll see signed guitars hanging on the walls and off the ceiling. You might find one from your favorite musician.

Hi Tone

Hi Tone cafe on N. Cleveland St. is the home to many local artists. Over the 23 years and three locations, Hi Tone has become an asset to Memphis’s music ecosystem. It was initially known for being a rock venue, but they’ve expanded and play artists of all genres. On some nights they have multiple artists. The breaks in between sets are the perfect chance to grab a drink or food and talk to the other concertgoers. But if music isn’t your thing, you can go on Tuesdays when they have open-mic comedy. Don’t forget to say hi to Trash Cat, Hi Tone’s mascot and beloved black cat who comes and goes as he pleases.

The Absinthe Room

When you think of Memphis Bars, I’m sure Beale Street comes to mind. Beale Street is downtown and is full of bars that hold their own unique personalities.

The Absinthe Room is a great hideaway from the rest of Beale. After you climb the massive staircase at the door, you’re greeted with an alternative yet quaint and intimate atmosphere. There are four pool rooms and three of them overlook Beale. The walls are covered in vintage movie posters and advertisements. It’s easy to meet new people in The Absinthe Room. The music isn’t too loud but loud enough to keep up the energy. The games give you and your new friends something to talk about– the liquid encouragement helps with that too.

Cameo

Cameo sits at the corner of Union Ave. and McLean in Midtown Memphis. It’s bartender-owned, cocktail-driven, and has delicious food. The cocktail menu is seasonal and shows the bar’s personality. One current cocktail is called, “Rage Quit.” Unlike the other cocktails on the menu that have a full description and ingredient list, this one’s description says, “You wish you knew…(Contains Secrets & Danger!)”  There’s a full bar and table seating. It’s on the smaller side which makes it easy to mingle. The walls are black, light bulbs are hanging from the ceiling, and beautiful taxidermy adorns the walls. Don’t forget to follow Cameo’s house rules. Rule #11, “Drink responsibly and have fun! Please don’t barf in our booths. :)”

Paula & Raiford’s Disco

Located on 14 S. Second St. downtown, “Raiford’s” is a well-known nightlife spot for people of all ages. It’s got a 70’s disco vibe with a modern sensibility. Lights, balloons, and disco balls hang from the ceiling. Fog and smoke are in the air. The dance floor glows under your feet. There are colorful handprints on the walls. Raiford’s is uniquely Memphis. The DJ plays a mix of throwbacks and current songs. The crowd is lively and fun. Bring cash because we’re taking it back to the 70s.
